The Amakusa Shirou Statue
Amakusa Shirou was a Japanese Christian during the Edo period. He played a pivotal role as the leader of the Shimabara Rebellion, an uprising of Japanese Roman Catholics against the Shogunate. Despite his young age, Amakusa Shirou’s charisma and miraculous reputation among Japanese Catholic followers earned him the nickname “Heaven’s messenger.” The rebellion, centered around Hara Castle, put up fierce resistance but ultimately failed due to logistical challenges.
